Adjacent

At NYU ITP, I spent two years as editor for the program’s journal, Adjacent, sharing ideas in technology, media, and beyond. I spent the first year managing contributions, soliciting, and organizing guest talks, which included some of my favorite thinkers and artists: Keller Easterling, CW&T, and Sam Lavigne.

The work I did in the first year significantly contribute to the editorial interest that was carried onto the next.
In the second year, Max Chu and I were elected as Managing Editors, and I invited Jo Suk to be the Editor-At-Large for an crucial issue on labor.

From the brief introduction: “Late-stage capitalism has alienated, abstracted, and complicated what labor looks like. We barely even recognize when we’re performing labor anymore. As we thumb-stroke the “free” hours of the day away, we may not be perspiring, but we are slowly amassing value for the given platform. What do we call the creation of value, if not work? We once knew sweat as the primary by-product of exertion. Today, our exertion takes many forms, not all of which are evidenced so texturally or odorously, but all of which are implicated in some way with capital production. Adjacent 11: Sweat is an accentuation of our shifting labor conditions under technofascism and capitalism, however immaterial they may seem.”

In the meantime, we redesigned the website that houses all the previous issues, and made something evergreen.

We used the opportunity and gave the brand identity a small refresh as well. Graphic design effort was led by Shiqing Chen and Sixin Chen.

It was a great year working with Max Chu, Jo Suk, Mishka Morgan, Ellen Chen, Vinh Nguyen, and Shiqing Chen.
